Doomscrolling is when you endlessly scroll through apps like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts without really thinking about it. What feels like “just a few minutes” can easily turn into hours wasted. The good news is that small changes can make a huge difference.

- Understand why doomscrolling happens Apps are designed to keep you there for as long as possible. The longer you’re there, the more money they make. Things like notifications, autoplay videos, and recommendation algorithms are all made to make you stay longer. This means that doomscrolling is not just from bad self control, it is designed to trap you. One of the first steps to stop it is to notice when it is happening. Ask yourself things like: Am I enjoying this? Did I even choose to open this app? How long have I been scrolling?
- Move distraction apps off your home screen One of the best ways to reduce doomscrolling is to hide it entirely. This makes it harder to subconsciously doomscroll. Either move it off your homescreen or make it where you need to search it on your device.
- Set screen time limits Most phones come with these already built in, all you need to do is turn them on in settings. Even if you ignore the limits, they can still help you because they make you more aware of how much time you’ve been spending on your device. This personally works for me. Good ways to use them: Set 30-60 minute limit for social media Create a downtime for before bed Track which apps waste the most time.
- Replace the habit instead of removing it One reason doomscrolling is hard to stop is because your brain still wants stimulation and entertainment. Instead replace it with something else: Listening to music Walking outside Gaming (healthier with limits) Working out Drawing Reading Learning a skill The goal is not to remove entertainment completely. The goal is to stop automatic scrolling that wastes time without giving much back.
Doomscrolling can quietly waste huge amounts of time and attention. The best way to stop it is by making small changes that reduce automatic scrolling and replace it with better habits. You do not need perfect self-control. You just need systems that make scrolling less automatic and less tempting.
